Tensile Architecture Is All Around Us

Ronstan has contributed to some of the world’s most intriguing examples of tensile architecture. Aesthetically unique designs in suspension bridges, glass curtain walls, fabric architecture, and lighting have been made possible by structural cables and rods acting in tension to carry loads to supports. Tensile architecture is the perfect structural solution for art and signage installations, as well as home interior design.Recognize tensile architecture in surrounding spaces, and see if it can be the structural solution or centerpiece of your next design. Curious about where to start?

Glass curtain walls can add a striking element to architectural design. However the glass requires structural support which many architects specify to also be aesthetically pleasing to fit the parameters of the design goals. The Ronstan cabling system at the JW Marriot at L.A. Live tower in Los Angeles checks both these boxes. Read more about the Gensler design and more details about the project here.

Lighting is key to defining how a space will be used by the public. At Federation Square, 15,000 people can meet at any time in an open amphitheater, surrounded by spectacular buildings. Catenary lighting is suspended in a “random” pattern up high, but sheds light on specific, pin pointed spaces, all around the square. Read more about it here.
